"Kids Learn what We Learn and have Fun Doing it!" The Cooks and Bakers Club at Delcastle Technical High School in Wilmington, Delaware is a crowd-drawing, volunteer cooking troupe that brings the kitchen experience to young children. All around northern Delaware, from the Ronald McDonald House to the Newark and New Castle Public Libraries to the confines of school itself, the Cooks and Bakers are introducing young participants to the unique science that is cooking. The Cooks and Bakers club was born to help prepare the students for state and national cooking competitions. To take their training to the next level, the group branched out into the community through 'service
learning.' This year, the Cooks and Bakers celebrates 9 years of service to the community! We have a calendar full of great events for the
2011-2012 school year. By sharing their understanding of cooking with others, the members of Cooks and Bakers have the unique opportunity of working with eager, young children. The students have worked with children in the community in constructing Gingerbread Houses for Christmas, fruit carving, homemade pasta making, candy apple creations and major events like inviting children from a local daycare to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss to the Culinary Arts department's classroom for a day of Seuss-like food creations.
Additionally, the Cooks and Bakers take to the road for 'living classroom' experiences. The group has traveled to the outdoor markets in Philadelphia, the Reading Terminal Market and explored the culinary offerings of New York City. Over the years, the crew explored food - Disney style - with a trip to Orlando and a discussion with a member of the Disney culinary team followed by a few days sampling what DisneyWorld had to offer. This past summer, we travelled to Italy for a culinary immersion experience as part of our "Cooking without Borders" program. We will return in 2012 for another adventure in the Italian countryside. Through the generous donations from Hy-Point Dairy, Simon & Schuster Books, Kenny Family Shop Rite, USFoods, CenterPlate @ Frawley Stadium/Blue Rocks, Panera, and the support of WJBR-99.5 fm, the Cooks and Bakers have been able to promote their classes for young children throughout the year. Be sure to visit our friends over at Pyknic for some great culinary-inspired clothing! The crew from Pyknic works with our students discussing entrepreneurship, the creative process and food-inspired clothes. Support the foodies!
